Lamb – From The Goal Line To The Grammy’s

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

Written by J Hatch

What’s good Lamb, Lets start with the unique name, how did that come about?

Well my industry name is my actual last name! I chose to go with it because it already had some kind of a ring to it! Plus I was called “Lamb” Back in my organized sports playing days when football/baseball coaches would call all of the kids by their last name anyway! It was going to either be my first name “Cainon” or “Lamb” because both of them were kind of different! In the industry, most people have 2 syllable names like DJ this, J that, Young this and that! lol….I thought it would be cool to have one syllable!

Your originally Miami born and bred, and you know the Miami sound and overall movement has been very massive over the last few years, what is it about the area, music, artists and movement that has people finally paying attention to one of the biggest music havens in the game right now?

Well I believe when up north hip-hop slowed down, the south hip-hop made a big impact with records that killed in the club, the new club sound had become what Lil John produced! And everyone saw the south “Having Fun” rather than beefing with each other! Thus producing artist after artist starting in the ‘A’ (Atlanta), then it opened doors for DJ Khaled who took over Miami radio! He played records that would have normally been mixtape songs for the hood, and made those records a whole movement! I think Miami also had “the crab mentality”. Everybody wanted to be the first artist to blow mainstream coming out of the city! Knowing that whomever would be the first to do it, would not only smash the industry, but would paint what the world would see and hear as the new Miami sound!

You have a very interesting story in regards to how you became a producer, you started in the church by bangin on the walls as the choir sang and then your mother gave you an mpc at an early age. When did you realize music was calling you?

I realized that music was my calling 4 years ago in 2004 when Missy Elliott and Timbaland new all the words to a record that I did for a local artist named Lil Brianna! That was the same year my mom passed away, And also the same year I met Missy, and also the same year I retired from Pro football.

Now you went on to college, got a degree in criminal justice, then played professional football for a few years until a chance encounter with Missy Elliot helped land your first placement on Fantasia’s debut album, you have to take the readers through that whole story, sounds like something out of a storybook fantasy for producers.

I was an All-American Wide receiver in football for FAMU. After I finished football, although I didn’t get drafted, The Miami Dolphins called me a week and a half after the draft! Three days before they called me, I injured my elbow working out for this new pro football league that I went to play for while waiting on an NFL teams call. I went into the dolphins camp injured and couldn’t play for a month until I was healthy. When I was healthy and ready to play, the pro personnel director at the time for the Dolphins told me that he lost his job, an that he no longer called the shots for bringing guys in! He told me to stay in shape because you never know! I didn’t want to wait for football to call me, so I went back to college to finish school and obtain my degree in criminal justice! After I finished I went to play Arena football, although it’s professional, it just doesn’t pay enough! So I started creating beats for a hobby! When local artist told me that they’d buy my beats, I basically gave them away to gain exposure! Threw affiliations with a local artist named Lil Brianna , I had a chance to send a beat Cd to Missy Elliott who signed her and used my beats to write on for Major artist!

Now your a multiplatinum producer with several major credits with artists like Monica, Ruben Studdard, Jazmine Sullivan and you even won a grammy for Keisha Cole’s ‘Let It Go’ F/ Missy, how did these experiences help mold you as a producer and how does it feel to get recognized for your god given talent?

It feels great man! I always gave God the glory in all that I’ve done! Even when I would score a touchdown I would go down and openly give God praise stretching my hands up on my knees to God! And that on every TD that I scored! It’s funny because I’m so use to expressing myself physically, And in music, all I do to express myself is create it and wait your creation to be excepted, which I have no control over! The music travels on it’s own!

That’s very passionate, seems like you’re a very focused individual, You have also had the opportunity to have some music placed on various sitcoms and commercials (we all know how lucrative licensing is to a producer) What were some of the placements and what can you tell upcoming producers about the licensing aspect in regards to income and resume building?

Well I’ve been blessed to be apart of a some commercials/ reality shows. The Chrysler commercial came through Missy. I produced the theme music to Missy’s reality TV show “Road to Stardom”.

You also produced a record on the Step it Up PT 2 soundtrack, how has that helped build your resume and do you intend to do more soundtracks production and movie scoring in the future?

I really plan to get into scoring more than just movie soundtracks! Because scoring pays way more money!

What’s next on the agenda for Lamb?

I have one of the two next single on Jazmine Sullivan’s “Fearless” album. A record called “Dream Big”.Maybe released in the UK first! Fantasia/Missy/Ciara/Briscoe/Brianna

If someone wants to make a serious inquiry about your production services how can they?

They can hit Ramone “Razor’ HERE

Any last words or shouts?

I give God the Glory for everything he has done and is going to do! Thanks!

Interview by: Frankie P

NAS——”NY STATE OF MIND”

When and where did you make the track?

I MADE THE TRACK AUGUST 1993 @ D & D STUDIOS IN NYC……

What did the artist think when they first heard it?

NAS WAS BLOWN AWAY WITH THE TRACK BECAUSE HE WAS THERE WHEN I MADE IT FROM SCRATCH…..WHEN HE WALKED IN I HAD NO DRUMS AND NO CONCEPT….WE HAD ALREADY DONE A DEMO VERSION OF “REPRESENT” AND I WAS IN COMPETITION WITH ALL OF MY FAVORITE PRODUCERS WHO WERE BRINGING HEAT TO THE TABLE(LARGE PROFESSOR, PETE ROCK, Q-TIP)…IT WAS ONLY RIGHT THAT I BRING MY AAA GAME………

What was the studio session like?

THE SESSION WAS ILL BECAUSE NAS USED TO ROLL WITH A CREW OF DUDES TO MY SESSIONS WHICH CONSISTED OF AT LEAST 10 AND THEY WERE ALL THERE DRINKING MAD HENNESY, 40′S AND GETTIN BLUNTED…SHOWBIZ( OF SHOWBIZ & AG) WAS THERE, AND MY LABEL MANAGER BIGGEST GORD WAS THERE….WHEN I WAS HUNTING FOR SAMPLES, I PLAYED THE JOE CHAMBERS SAMPLE AND WHEN WE ALL HEARD THE PIANO SOUND SO SINISTER, WE ALL GAVE EACH OTHER THAT LOOK LIKE “HOOK THAT UP INTO A BEAT !”…

FROM THERE I FOUND THE RIGHT DRUMS AND I STARTED THE INTRO PART FIRST (WITH THE SPACE INTRO FROM DONALD BYRD, AND I KNEW THAT I WANTED THE BEAT TO BUILD BEFORE THE PIANO KICKS IN SINCE I HEAR THINGS IN MY HEAD BEFORE I GO TO TAPE (YES WE WERE USING 2–INCH REELS BACK THEN….) NAS USED TO GO IN A CORNER BY HIMSELF AND RHYME TO HIMSELF WITH HIS HAND OVER HIS MOUTH LIKE IF HE DIDNT WANT ANYBODY TO HEAR HIM SPIT….

First time you heard it on radio or in club what were you thinking?

I FIRST HEARD THE TRACK @ THE TUNNEL IN NYC WHICH WAS THE MOST GHETTO CLUB GOING ON SINCE LATIN QUARTERS AND UNION SQUARE OF THE 90′S (FUNKMASTER FLEX RULED THAT SPOT)….YOU HAD TO HAVE GHETTO PASSES GALORE TO EVEN BE LET IN THE CLUB AND YOU BETTER RIP THE STAGE OR YOU WILL GET THE APOLLO STYLE BOOOO AND MAYBE A FEW BOTTLES THROWN AT YOU……NAS WAS PROMOTING HIS “ILLMATIC” LP AND I REMEMBER BIG L WAS HIS LABELMATE WHO WAS PROMOTING HIS LP AS WELL AND HE CAME WITH ME TO CHECK THE SCENE OUT THAT NIGHT….THE ALBUM HAD JUST COME OUT THAT WEEK BEFORE AND THE LINE WAS AROUND THE CORNER…..EVERY CAR WAS PLAYING A DIFFERENT NAS SONG FROM THE ALBUM AND I HEARD AT LEAST 10 CARS PLAYING “NY STATE OF MIND” SUPER LOUD WHILE THEY POSTED UP OR WAS LOOKING FOR PARKING….IT WAS CLEARLY A NAS YEAR !!!

Anything else you can tell us that revolves around that track (funny story or weird event that happened with the track)?

TO THIS VERY DAY, IF YOU LISTEN TO NAS AND GRAND WIZ IN THE BOOTH, NAS IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHEN HE IS GOING TO START THE FIRST VERSE….(AFTER THE LINE…”STRAIGHT OUT THE FUCKING DUNGEONS OF RAP, WHERE FAKE NIGGAS DONT MAKE IT BACK…”(LISTEN CLOSELY WHERE HE SAYS, “I DONT KNOW HOW TO START THIS SHIT….” I AM POINTING FRANTICALLY AT THE BOOTH FOR HIM TO LOOK AT ME BECAUSE I AM COUNTING HIM IN WITH THE 1,2,3,4..AND HE LOOKS UP AROUND THE TIME I GO 3, 4 AND YOU HEAR HIM JUST JUMP IN AND GO…”YO, RAPPERS I MONKEY FLIP EM…ETC….) HE DID THE FIRST VERSE NON STOP IN ONE TAKE AND THEN HE SAYS TO STOP THE TAPE AND ASKS US IN THE TALK BACK “YO HOW WAS THAT ?” WE WERE STILL HIGH FIVING AND SCREAMIN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOOTH LIKE WE WERE AT A FOOTBALL GAME THAT JUST GOT A TOUCHDOWN…I KNEW HE WAS GONNA BE THAT NEXT DUDE….ON TO THE SECOND VERSE……A DAY LIKE THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN THAT PURE AND UNEXPECTED…ONE OF THE BEST SESSIONS OF MY LIFETIME…

the psyclonesINTERVIEW BY FRANKIE P

When did you start making beats?

In the early 90’s, we lived next door to our cousin which introduced us to Hip Hop. As we got deeper into the culture we took it upon ourselves to get into the production side of the music, freshman year of high school in 98. It wasn’t something that we planned for, it just came naturally. It started with a cheap Casio keyboard and our father’s tape deck. As we continued making beats we upgraded our equipment. We would take our beats to school and show the mc’s. That led to us producing a full length album for a local group. After the good feedback from the album, we knew we had it in us to pursue producing music as a career.

Who are your musical influences?

We got our musical influence from a lot of genres. It ranges from 90’s Hip-Hop, DJ Premier, Organized Noize, DJ Hi-Tek, RZA, etc. Stephen Marley, 70’s Soul music, and anybody that was and is creating good music with substance.

Describe your style.

We started with strictly original beats. Gian on the drums and Meak on the keys, but have opened up into working with samples in the last couple of years. We have also been making RnB, Pop and are venturing into music for TV/Film so it depends on the situation and what opportunity comes our way. Our style is not repetitive. It’s soulful with an edge but we always try to keep it musical and melodic since that’s our roots.

What are you using to make your tracks?

MPC 2000xl, Motif es8, Korg M3, lots of VST’s, Logic, crates of records and live instrumentation.

If you could work with one artist who would it be and why?

There’s alot of artist in the past that have influenced us that we would love to work with such as Nas, Outkast, Jay-Z, etc., but right now we would have to say Lupe Fiasco. The fact that he had so much success being original, lyrical, and making good Hip-Hop in today’s industry is amazing.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

We see ourselves being established as producers and being one of the go to names in the industry. Reaching the super producer status and being respected in the game for making good music.
