Interview by Gerald Kong
Every month, we will be posting a new article called the iStandard Member iD. This article will showcase one of our producers on the site’s homepage that is active within the iStandard community and most of all has bangin’ tracks! To be considered for next month’s Member iD, check out the blog HERE. This month’s Member iD is Style Misia – http://www.istandardproducers.com/members/1259/
When did you start making beats?
I started making beats around 1995 on an old Numark DJ Mixer that had an 8 second sampler. Then I started using other peoples equipment after that…then my folks got me my first sampler around 1997 and I was in business full force!
Who are your musical influences?
First and foremost my father. He’s a guitarist, pretty much a multi-instrumentalist, he had his own band in the 70’s and 80’s. He always had me around music and records. I started off in this game as a DJ then to an Emcee. He’s the one who pushed me to Produce music when he saw I wasn’t gettin the right production from other local producers. He also instilled in me that I would have a better shot and much more lucrative career as Producer…so I listened…and it’s slowly paying off. As far as outside musical influences….damn…this list can go on. I got inspiration from the Golden Hip Hop Era, NWA, early Hieroglyphics (Del, Souls of Mischief), Freestyle Fellowship, Too Short, Roger Troutman & Zapp, old 90’s slow jams, Lowrider Oldies, the Motown Sound, Smokey, Isaac Hayes, Dre, Premo, Pete Rock, Dj Quik, Teddy Riley, Jay Dee aka J-Dilla, Nottz, Hi-Tek….man my inspiration can go a mile long…I love music!
Describe your style?
My name means “The Deliverer of Many Styles” hench the name Style MiSia(Pronounced Messiah). My style is raw, unorthodox, non-traditional and versatile. I always tell artists and A&R’s to not limit my sound to my discography/resume. I can do whatever I put my mind to. Been living up to my name for very long time.
What are you using to make your tracks?
I am an old hardware head…started with a Ensoniq EPS…I came from the old ASR-10’s, MPC-60’s…but I am proud to say that I converted to software in 2005….and I’ve been using REASON 3.0 ever since…on everything…and it’s a beautiful thing!
If you could work with one artist, who would it be and why?
Well let me see….I would love to work with Slick Rick. I always loved his storytelling abilities. I dig his vocal style and superior smooth cadence on the mic. He’s a Veteran emcee and does it with no hard effort…it’s all natural. The Ruler is one of the sickest in my book.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years….I see myself with several grammys and a handful of gold and platinum plaques in my studio. I would love to be considered in the top 5 Producers of the game…I’m working on that…and plan on being one of the best. Longevity is key….and thats what I want.
LOOK OUT for my Instrumental Album “Stylistics” (Beats, Blaps & Slaps) coming out in July, 2009. Check for that and
