Interview by: Frankie P
When and where did you make the track?
I made this track in my own home studio sometime around december 2006. I remember that because I was in the studio working with a Roc-a-fella/ Def Jam artist named Young Chris on his album and he told me he wanted me to make a crazy intro for his album. I made the “Gossip” beat a few days later and played for him and didn’t get any kind of response from him so I kept it moving with the track. Later that week I emailed it to Wayne and the next day my dude Drew called me and said Weezy did 1 of the craziest records to your “Gossip” track. I was pretty hype but nothing really happend after that until like 8months later. Shit is crazy like that sometimes…
What did the artist think when they first heard it?
I wasn’t in the studio when Wayne 1st heard it but I was in the studio when Tez heard it for the 1st time 7months after weezy recorded it and he went nuts. He was tryin to make a movie with the record… I remember he left the studio and went outside and started game planning how he was going to work its release. I was more concern that I didn’t just want them to throw the record out to the streets as another leak.
What was the studio session like?
Wayne is a monster… I didn’t work in the studio with him on this record but I have on other records. Basically if he’s feeling the beat he’ll get into his zone circle the room a few times and hit the booth.
First time you heard it on radio or in club what were you thinking?
The way I got to witness it for the 1st time was at the same time as the rest of the world on BET during the BET Awards where he world premiered a live performance of the record. That shit was crazy for me.
Anything else you can tell us that revolves around that track (funny story or weird event that happened with the track)?
2 years after it was made it was released as part of The Carter 3 in the deluxe edition.
