Back Track – Gossip by Lil Wayne – Produced by Street Runner

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Interview by: Frankie P

When and where did you make the track?

I made this track in my own home studio sometime around december 2006. I remember that because I was in the studio working with a Roc-a-fella/ Def Jam artist named Young Chris on his album and he told me he wanted me to make a crazy intro for his album. I made the “Gossip” beat a few days later and played for him and didn’t get any kind of response from him so I kept it moving with the track. Later that week I emailed it to Wayne and the next day my dude Drew called me and said Weezy did 1 of the craziest records to your “Gossip” track. I was pretty hype but nothing really happend after that until like 8months later. Shit is crazy like that sometimes…

What did the artist think when they first heard it?

I wasn’t in the studio when Wayne 1st heard it but I was in the studio when Tez heard it for the 1st time 7months after weezy recorded it and he went nuts. He was tryin to make a movie with the record… I remember he left the studio and went outside and started game planning how he was going to work its release. I was more concern that I didn’t just want them to throw the record out to the streets as another leak.

What was the studio session like?

Wayne is a monster… I didn’t work in the studio with him on this record but I have on other records. Basically if he’s feeling the beat he’ll get into his zone circle the room a few times and hit the booth.

First time you heard it on radio or in club what were you thinking?

The way I got to witness it for the 1st time was at the same time as the rest of the world on BET during the BET Awards where he world premiered a live performance of the record. That shit was crazy for me.

Anything else you can tell us that revolves around that track (funny story or weird event that happened with the track)?

2 years after it was made it was released as part of The Carter 3 in the deluxe edition.

1.When And Where Did You Make The Track?

Well This Particular Track Started At “Knoxville” Of The Olympicks Studio….We Knew What Type Of Feel Ross Was Going For, For His Album From Him Going into Great Detail When We Was In His Atlanta Studio About a couple Weeks b4 We Created The Track…Knoxville Found The Sample, Put The Chops In It then Sent it over to “Flawless Of The Olympicks & He Added Some Of The Instrumentation in the track As Far As The Strings & Bells Ect Then After That he Sent it over to “Jay Fab” Of The Olympicks & He Proceeded With More Instrumentation like The Brass And Adding The First Parts Of The Percussion for the track Then It Was Sent Over To “Pc Of The Olympicks And He Tweaked/Perfected The Drums And Finished The Percussion For The Track……Then Finally It Was Sent To “Bp” Of The Olympicks And He Put The Final Mix On The Entire Track As Well As The Last Minute Tweaks Of Track and Thats How The Olympicks Created Mafia Music 2.

2.What did the artist think when they first heard it?

Well When He Got It….He Got It By Email So Unfortunately We Wasn’t There To See His Initial Reaction From Hearing The Track, But A Few Days After We Sent it out we were contacted By “Spiff” Of Maybach Music like “WOW This Might Be The One” And After The Song Was Recorded We Were Notified that it was going to be the Intro To The Teflon Don Album.

3.What Was The Studio Session Like?

The Sessions Were Actually Pretty Chill And Straight Forward Cuz We Had A Good Picture Painted Of What Ross Wanted From Him Telling us Which Made It Less Hectic When We Were Creating So EveryThing Went Very Smooth….

4. First Time You Heard It On The Radio Or In The Club What were you thinking?

We Were All Shocked & Took By Surprised When We First Heard It Cuz We Didn’t Know The Release Date. It Kinda Just Came Out So When It Was Released Was Actually The First Time We All Heard The Full Product And We Were Like “WOOOOOOOW”….Then every one Was Speaking So Highly Of it, Not Only Of The Track But Of The Song as A Whole, Using Words Like “Great” “Classic” “That Signature Ross Sound” “Real Music” As Well As alot of other things….It Just Was A Very Good Look For us And Its Opening Alot Of New Doors For us As Up & Coming Producers And Were Just Grateful we Were Able 2 be Apart Of it.

Back track – ‘Anything’ by SWV ft. Wu Tang Clang – Produced by Allstar

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Song: Anything Remix
Album: Above the Rim Soundtrack – 1994
Produced by: Allstar

Interview by: Frankie P

When and where did you make the track?

I was introduced to SWV by my dude Lord Finesse. He had done a remix for
them and told me I should do one for them as well. I worked on “Anything” at my apartment in Springfield, Mass.

What did the artist think when they first heard it?

I sent the rough idea to their A&R Kenny Ortiz. He went crazy over the sample idea and put me in the studio immediately. They had just gotten an offer from Suge/Deathrow records to feature them on their upcoming soundtrack “Above The Rim”.Unfortunately that soundtrack had a tight deadline, like they needed the song yesterday!

What was the studio session like?

I had the girls meet me at Quad recording studios in New York City. My dude JOE (R&B Star) came down to help me vocal produce the song. The lead singer (Coko) didn’t seem too impressed with what we were doing but she did what she had to do. Then wu-tang came thru with The whole clan. I told Rza what I was trying to do with the song, he was diggin the song but felt it wasn’t street enough for the clan. So Rza did a beat along with mine in order for the clan to write to it. At that time we didn’t know which clan members we wanted but I knew for sure I wanted Meth.. Everyone wrote a verse, RZA made the executive decision for the line up to be Meth, Old Dirty and U-God. After we cut the vocals, the next day I went to mix the song, I decided to take out the RZA beat on the rap verse because it didn’t work with the key of the song. As I was in the process of mixing Suge calls looking for his F*ckn smash! Mind you Suge had paid us for a song he hadn’t heard yet and was on a tight deadline. I told him we had just started the mix and should be done in about 12hrs. He wasn’t haven’t it and wanted to hear it right now, as is. Well the song at that point was like Tyra Banks without makeup, Not Hot! But I had to send it to him anyway. When he heard it, dude was pissed! We got the all the typical Suge threats to be expected. Told them give me 24hrs and I promise a hit!. I went in the both and chanted “It’s like that y’all” and finished the mix.

First time you heard it on radio or in club what were you thinking?

The next day the A&R sent the song to WBLS without talking to the label or group,
the minute WBLS got the song, they blasted it all day! When I heard it that next day I knew it was a run-a-way smash!

Anything else you can tell us that revolves around that track (funny story or weird event that happened with the track)?

Funny thing is Wu-tang was upset because they were working “Cream” at radio and “Anything” was taking the steam from that song. I Told Rza it would open the clan to a whole new market and the rest is history…

Song: Feel So Good
Album: Harlem World – 1997
Produced by:
Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie

When and where did you make the track?

I made “Feels So Good” right @ Daddy’s House, Studio A, in 10 minutes..lol..probably about Spring ‘97

What did the artist think when they first heard it?

Mase loved it! He jumped right on it and started writing verses but we didn’t have a hook yet so i stopped him from writing to the track till we had a hook-later that night I got Kelly Price to come in and we wrote the hook with her and she sang it and then he spit the verses.

What was the studio session like?

Our sessions were always drink, ladies and smoke filled ya heard!!! Lmao…

First time you heard it on radio or in club what were you thinking?

First time I heard it on the radio I knew I had another one…it sounded crispy and bright and very radio friendly.
It was my formula and I was in a crazy zone those years..

Anything else you can tell us that revolves around that track (funny story or weird event that happened with the track)?

Funny Story: Well Puff and I made Mase spit the song over twice-Puff didn’t like Mase’s tone…actually the second version is the one we put out…Mase got mad @ me one night when we had to go back in and re-record because he didn’t understand why he had to keep spittin’ it over and over-of course he thought everything he spit was fire ..lol..so he made me wait in the studio for him for like 3 hours…i was callin and callin him and he kept sayin he was on his way…i waited of course while i was workin on tracks withe LOX and when he got there he had a 50 of Branson for me cause he knew he was wrong-he walked in with that smile and said “My bad OG, u was right”..Lmao…

This was our first song placement ever and it’s the only song on Snoop’s “Welcome to tha Chuuch” album that he doesn’t sing or rap on LOL. 1500!!!
